Q4- Who would be the audience for your media product?

Due to the content in most thrillers, there is usually an age restriction to prevent young children from watching the film. The majority of thrillers have a certificate of 15 or 18, meaning that the film is only viewable for those older than these ages. For our thriller, we agreed that it would have a certificate of 15.

From the image on the right, thriller movies are mainly watched by adults aged 18-24 (the other age group that thrillers are watched by are 50+). However, for the general population movies are watched by 35-49 year olds, showing that thrillers attract a younger audience than other genres.

From talking to my friends and family, I found that this was true. Females over the age of 25 tended to say that they preferred romantic films or comedies and males said that they enjoyed action the most. Here are some of the response I received from 16-18 year olds about thrillers. 

Therefore, the target age of our thriller would be 16-24 year olds. This age group includes college and university students so I decided to ask a few friends on their opinion of thrillers and whether they would watch them in the cinema.

The gender that the film is aimed towards depends on the sub-genre. For example, romantic thrillers will attract a female audience whereas action thrillers may appeal more to men.

I found that crime thrillers appealed more to males. A lot of the girls that I spoke to said that they found thrillers to scary to watch so romantic thrillers appealed to them more.

Our thriller is a crime thriller as the storyline is based upon detectives trying to solve a series of murders carried out by a serial killer. The characteristics of a crime thriller include that it focuses on the criminal and the protagonist and that the mood constantly builds tension and suspense. Crime thrillers also incorporate both action and psychological aspects.

Our thriller will meet these characteristics as the storyline is based upon the serial killer and detective. We also agreed as a group that there would be psychological aspects in the thriller.

In my opinion, crime thrillers target audience can be for both male and females depending on each film, different factors may determine who the film appeals to. For example, our film may appeal more to women due to the fact that the serial killer is a woman, unlike most thrillers. However, the fact that the film will include psychological aspects means that the film may also attract males.

Therefore, the target audience of our film would be males aged 16-24.

I made a Facebook page for Young Eyes to receive some feedback from our target audience.
