A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. In our film opening we have followed a few stereotypes but with one of the characters we have challenged their stereotype towards the end of the film opening.
The social groups presented in my film opening are:
- The elderly
- Teenager
- Middle-aged adult (Detective voice over)
The clearest example of challenging stereotypes is shown with our character Elizabeth who appears as an old woman when really she is a young serial killer. This challenges the stereotype of old people as often they are seen as weak or stupid. Even though we challenge this stereotype at the end we also followed it throughout most of our thriller as she appeared to be weak and frail.
We have also represented a teenager in our film opening. He is doing a typical activity done by young people which is jogging. The teenager is shown in a positive light as he is the one who tries to help the old woman who he thinks is having trouble with her shopping bags. This challenges a negative stereotype that male teenagers have which is that they are troublesome and are rude to older people.
In our film opening we also have a detective whose voice plays over a shot of the jogger's body after he has been murdered by the old woman. We have followed the stereotype of a detective being a male which is a stereotype used in many films.
