I dont think theres been a day that i havent enjoyed. Ive enhanced all my skills and become a better media student. Its been stressful and hard but it was fun. I think everyone needs a break from this blog and lets all just rest.

Signing Out Post.

The making of my thriller opening has been quite a roller-coaster. I have enjoyed filming the most as I'm a person who like to be involved in practical work and going to different locations and filming all our scenes came quite natural to me as I have worked with cameras and film before. One thing I didn't enjoy as much was blogging as I was sitting in one place writing about what I had done and I didn't find it very stimulating. The thing I absolutely hated about making our film had to be editing, it did get easier with time but majority of the time I just found it really boring and didn't enjoy it. Before I go, one thing I must say is that I had an amazing group who were all very hardworking and even though I usually prefer working independently they were a lovely group to have made my film with!

singing out post

doing this media unit was really interesting Ive enjoyed the filming process and have learnt many new things about myself, including that i enjoy working as part of a team, but believe I'm better by myself.

Evaluation Question 1

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The conventions of a film opening:

Some of the conventions of a film opening include:
  • The hook: a teaser of the narrative which grabs the audiences’ attention
  •   Special effects/ sounds effects
  •  Music: which is often used to build tension
  • The production company's ident
  •  The titles: these include the production company, main cast, the film's name, other cast members and the directors. The order in which these appear varies between films, for example, the actors may appear before the director if they are more famous.
  •    In some cases, an insight is given into the main characters of the film or the location of the thriller may be told.
  • The audience are able to have a sense of the film's mood.
During research, I found that thrillers can use a variety of these conventions depending on the type of film opening. A narrative opening will usually have a hook to keep the audience engaged, or some insight into the characters/location. Whereas, title sequences that use stylized editing or discrete title sequences use special effects and sound effects. Title over a blank screen do not include these conventions but instead focus on the titles and in most cases, music.
In all cases, titles are included and the mood of the film is set. The production company's ident is also always included.

Conventions of title sequences:

An example of a conventional film opening.
A conventional film opening starts with the production company ident and distribution company. This is usually followed by the actors that are starring in the film, however, if the writer is more famous or well known, their name will appear first. The placing of the film title varies but it usually at the beginning to middle of the title sequence - most commonly around the timing that the actors name's appear. The crew then follows, such as the director of photography, editor, product designer, music supervisor and costume designer. The very last titles are the producer and director.
Slight differences in the order mean that the writer may appear towards the end of the sequence.
Other conventions of a title sequence include that the titles appear in a plain font in a white or black font (sometimes they may be blue or red too). The titles are designed not to interfere with the film itself. The size of the font may differ, for example, information that is more important may be in a larger font than the rest.
In a conventional title sequence, the titles are placed in the corners of the screen, or, if it doesn't interfere too much with the film or if there is no narrative; in the middle of the screen. Titles that appear in the middle of the screen may be because the cast/crew are famous or it may be because of the contract between the actors and the production company.

How we have followed the conventions in our film opening:

create a gif

We followed the conventions of a title sequence by using a plain white font that doesn't distract from the narrative opening. We also slightly altered the font size so that the name of the cast appeared bigger than their role in the film. The titles appear in the corners of the screen or parallel to the spilt screens. Again, this was to ensure that they did not distract the audiences attention to what was happening in the opening.

Our titles appear from approximately 2 seconds each as this is how long they appear in a conventional film opening, this is also enough time to read the titles.
Above is a gif of the first 11 titles we included in our thriller opening.

Other ways in which we followed the conventions include:
  • The hook we included is at the end of our title sequence, we added a twist showing the elderly lady to actually be the murderer in our film.
  • Adding sounds to build tension, including natural sounds and diegetic music.
  • The production company at the beginning of the film.
  • The location is revealed by including establishing shots.
  • An insight into the main character by adding the detectives voiceover.

Layla's character.
An establishing shot of our location.

How was have challenged the conventions in our film opening:

We challenged the conventions of a film opening by using an upbeat modern song which our jogger was listening too. This set a different mood to most thrillers as the audience were made to feel comfortable and relaxed with the film. This would cause a greater shock at the end of the opening and would hopefully act as a hook to keep the audience engaged with the film.

Evaluation Question 2

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Karl Marx's concept of ideology is based on the idea that different social groups have different amounts of power, these inequalities in society create stereotypes about different groups of people. Although these stereotypes can be negative, they are used in media to help the audience to understand characters more easily. Using stereotypes can help the audience to make assumptions about the character and therefore understand the storyline more clearly.

Representation is the portrayal of someone/something in a particular way, stereotypes are used for representation of characters in films.
In our thriller opening there are only two characters that the audience are introduced to. A young male jogger and a elderly female. The jogger is a teenager/young man which instantly allows the audience to create a stereotype on him based upon his gender. The audience may assume that he is unruly or immature. In contrast, the elderly lady may be stereotyped as mature, boring and wise.

Teenagers, especially teenage boys, are portrayed in a negative way in media. They are often seen as violent on the news and many people may make judgements on teenagers because of these negative stereotypes. Sometimes television shows portray teenagers as irresponsible and disrespectful.
A mood board I created for some stereotypes made about teenage boys.
Our elderly lady.
We challenged this stereotype by represented teenagers in a positive light by showing Ami's character helping the lady with her shopping and offering to walk her home. This shows that he is considerate and polite.

Our character of the jogger.
The elderly lady is therefore shown to be weak, this is also reinforced through mise-en-scene as she uses a walking stick and walks extremely slowly.
However, this stereotype is challenged at the end as the elderly lady is in fact a young woman in disguise. Our main character and villain in our thriller is a woman, this is not like most thriller where a male plays the villain. In one way, this shows that the woman is smart in order to avoid being caught. In most films, women may be shown as inferior to men because they are physically weaker, which is why they are not usually villains.

A mood board I created for the stereotype of a detective.
One stereotype that we follow is male detective, the voice over at the end of our opening sequence is a man discussing the series of murders. In many thrillers, the detective is a male, we chose to have a male detective to make the character easy to understand.

Here is the response from two 18 year old university students when asked about the film and the stereotypes in it.

Evaluation Question 3

Here is a presentation I made on the production and distribution company that our group chose for our thriller and why it is best suited for our film.

Evaluation Question 4

Q4- Who would be the audience for your media product?

Thriller audience statistics: valmorgan.com
Due to the content in most thrillers, there is usually an age restriction to prevent young children from watching the film. The majority of thrillers have a certificate of 15 or 18, meaning that the film is only viewable for those older than these ages. For our thriller, we agreed that it would have a certificate of 15.

From the image on the right, thriller movies are mainly watched by adults aged 18-24 (the other age group that thrillers are watched by are 50+). However, for the general population movies are watched by 35-49 year olds, showing that thrillers attract a younger audience than other genres.

From talking to my friends and family, I found that this was true. Females over the age of 25 tended to say that they preferred romantic films or comedies and males said that they enjoyed action the most. Here are some of the response I received from 16-18 year olds about thrillers.

gif creators
Therefore, the target age of our thriller would be 16-24 year olds. This age group includes college and university students so I decided to ask a few friends on their opinion of thrillers and whether they would watch them in the cinema.

The gender that the film is aimed towards depends on the sub-genre. For example, romantic thrillers will attract a female audience whereas action thrillers may appeal more to men.
I found that crime thrillers appealed more to males. A lot of the girls that I spoke to said that they found thrillers to scary to watch so romantic thrillers appealed to them more.

Our thriller is a crime thriller as the storyline is based upon detectives trying to solve a series of murders carried out by a serial killer. The characteristics of a crime thriller include that it focuses on the criminal and the protagonist and that the mood constantly builds tension and suspense. Crime thrillers also incorporate both action and psychological aspects.

Our thriller will meet these characteristics as the storyline is based upon the serial killer and detective. We also agreed as a group that there would be psychological aspects in the thriller.

In my opinion, crime thrillers target audience can be for both male and females depending on each film, different factors may determine who the film appeals to. For example, our film may appeal more to women due to the fact that the serial killer is a woman, unlike most thrillers. However, the fact that the film will include psychological aspects means that the film may also attract males.

Therefore, the target audience of our film would be males aged 16-24.

I made a Facebook page for Young Eyes to receive some feedback from our target audience.
A Facebook group I made to help promote Young Eyes.

Evaluation Question 5

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

How we improved our work after our rough cut feedback:
During editing, we received rough cut feedback from our peers and teachers. The group as a whole liked our creativity and use of split screens. Our teacher, Rebecca, thought that to improve our work we should create tension and an atmosphere full of suspense, this is crucial in thrillers. To do this, we were advised to introduce Layla with shots on her own, using cross cuts, before both Layla and Ami appeared together on the screen.

Rebecca also made sure that we remembered our thriller shouldn't be humorous as the ending of our opening scene had the potential of being funny.

Some people suggested the use of foley sounds at the opening of our film to help create tension and to set the mood. The framing of some of our shots meant that Ami’s head was cut off so it was suggested that we check the framing of our shots too.
make
Here are some examples of bad framing from our rough cut.

The feedback from our rough cut was extremely useful. We were happy that the group appreciated our use of spilt screens and took into account all the advice we were given.

At the point of our rough cut, we hadn’t added any sound. When we did we made sure we used the sound from our original recording to help with the atmosphere. The recordings had picked up the sound of animals, cars, Layla’s shopping bags and footsteps. We also added the diegetic music playing from Ami’s earphones.

To prevent the ending of our opening from being humorous, we cut the clip before Layla’s walking stick was close to Ami’s head. During filming, Layla was worried that she would hurt Ami so she slowed down before the walking stick was close to Ami – this meant that the shots were clearly fake. Therefore, by cutting the shots before this happened, we prevented the film from being funny.

We adjusted our spilt screens to make sure that Ami’s head was always in shot, this made sure that all of our shots were relevant to our opening.

Therefore, the feedback we received from our rough cut was extremely useful as it allowed us to make changes to our work and find out what appealed most to our peers.

Appealing to our target audience:

The target audience for our thriller is 16-25 year olds. We had to consider what would appeal to them while filming and editing our thriller.

The fact that our film is low budget means that it is filmed in the same areas as the cinemas it will be released in. This was the case for ‘My brother the Devil’. Therefore, as our film is based in London and the opening scene has shots of Victoria Park in East London, the film may appeal to local people. It would also help the audience to relate more to the film and may help to attract a greater audience. Below are some pictures of the area we filmed in.
aa25294's album on Photobucket

The opening scene includes a young male which may attract more males as they may feel like they can relate to the character at the beginning of the film.

The use of sound is very important for attracting our target audience, we used the song ‘Let’s go’ by Calvin Harris ft. Ne-yo. This song will have been heard before by those of our target audience, especially because it has been played a lot on radio stations. Therefore, the use of this song in our opening will help to engage our audience. In the video below, you can see that some members of our target audience didn't recognise the song and would have liked a different song.

We hoped that the film name would attract our target audience as it is unusual which may mean that more people are likely to want to watch it. However, when interviewing two 18 year olds, they mentioned that the name of the film was too cliché.

Reaching our target audience:

Here is the Facebook page I made for 'Young Eyes'.
To reach the target audience I have used two social networking sites; Facebook and Twitter. The first reason for using these sites is that our film is low budget, meaning that billboards and television adverts would not be affordable. Another reason for using social networking sites is the majority of 16-25 year olds use them. This would make it easier for the film to reach more people and could increase the advertisement through word of mouth.

Young Eyes Twitter Campaign.

These sites are often used for film advertisement as they are easy to access, I added information about the release date and behind the scene images to help attract our target audience.

Using these sites has helped to increase the YouTube video views and has given our target audience the chance to give feedback on our film.

The Screen on the Green Cinema.

Our cinema screening for Young Eyes was on Monday 25th of March at The Screen on the Green. This allowed us to receive feedback as our thriller was watched by 16/17 year olds. Our thriller will also be available on DVD copies allowing us to show friends and family who may have not had internet access.

Our thriller has been uploaded to both Youtube and Vimeo.

The video above shows some feedback from two 18 year olds after watching our film.

Evaluation Question 7

Question 7: Look back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

make a gif
When working on our prelim, I had the basic skills necessary to use the equipment and software. As a group, we were confident in our knowledge of shot types which made the pre-production of our work quite easy. We were able to plan our shots, ensuring that we used a variety of shot types and camera angles. We then transferred the pictures to QuarkXPress to make our storyboard. One thing we learnt from planning was that our pictures had broken the rule of thirds. In comparison, our planning for our thriller was much more detailed and took longer as a group to work on. We spent more time planning our shots and the storyboard itself is much more descriptive. This made filming easier as we knew exactly what we needed to film. We also spent longer deciding on the location of our thriller. We had discussed as a group the type of place that we wanted to film and then took some pictures individually of the locations we thought would work well with our thriller. We then looked over the photos to help us decide on where to film.

A figrig.
During the production of our prelim, we faced some difficulties which gave us the opportunity to improve on when filming our thriller. The lighting of the corridor we filmed in was extremely dim, we wasn't aware of the impact bad lighting can have on your footage. It wasn't until the editing of our prelim that we realised we needed extra lighting in some of our shots.

We followed our storyboard during filming to make sure we remembered to match cut and reverse shot that we had planned. One piece of equipment I used, that I hadn't used before, was a figrig. A figrig is used for tracking and helps to prevent your hands from shaking while walking.

The filming of our prelim wasn't efficent as we had to wait for other students who were walking past or talking. We also found it difficult to follow the rule of thirds for Layla's over the shoulder shot as there wasn't much space in the room we were filming in.
I also learnt about the 180 degree rule while filming our prelim, we followed this rule while filming our thriller too.

During post-production, we used Final Cut Pro to put together our shots and add our match cut (shown below).

Screen shot: editing our prelim on Final Cut Pro.
I found editing easy as we didn't have to add other effects or sounds. Because we didn't edit the sounds of our prelim, you can hear some students talking at one point. I learnt afterwards that we could have lowered the volume at that point or removed the sound.

make a gif

We made sure that we filmed our thriller when there was natural lighting, on one of our days of filming we found that our shots were too dark so we re-shoot them. Here is an example of the improvement in lighting from our prelim to our thriller.

My skills have improved since the prelim as I have developed my editing skills. I learnt how to create split screens. On the left is an example of a split screen from our thriller.  We used split screens as well as cross cuts to help the to show that both characters would eventually collide.

The framing of our shots improved in our thriller. Here is a close up shot of Layla and Nyomi shaking hands in our prelim and some examples of close-up's in our thriller.

We also added titles to our thriller. Although I knew how to add titles on Final Cut Pro, I learnt more about changing font sizes and ensuring that the titles were within 'title safe'. On the right is a comparison of a shot from our prelim and from our thriller.

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your Media Product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real Media Products?

Evaluation - Question 1

Below is a video with annotations to show how our group followed & challenged the conventions of film openings:

Evaluation - Question 2

Here is a gif showing the stereotypes that we have followed or challenged in our film opening.

creator gif
A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. In our film opening we have followed a few stereotypes but with one of the characters we have challenged their stereotype towards the end of the film opening.

The social groups presented in my film opening are:

  • The elderly
  • Teenager
  • Middle-aged adult (Detective voice over)

The clearest example of challenging stereotypes is shown with our character Elizabeth who appears as an old woman when really she is a young serial killer. This challenges the stereotype of old people as often they are seen as weak or stupid. Even though we challenge this stereotype at the end we also followed it throughout most of our thriller as she appeared to be weak and frail.

We have also represented a teenager in our film opening. He is doing a typical activity done by young people which is jogging. The teenager is shown in a positive light as he is the one who tries to help the old woman who he thinks is having trouble with her shopping bags. This challenges a negative stereotype that male teenagers have which is that they are troublesome and are rude to older people.

In our film opening we also have a detective whose voice plays over a shot of the jogger's body after he has been murdered by the old woman. We have followed the stereotype of a detective being a male which is a stereotype used in many films.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Evaluation - Question 3

Below is a presentation I have made about my groups choice of production and distribution company and why it works best for us and our thriller opening.

Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Evaluation - Question 4

When speaking about our target audience in a group we all agreed that it would be a young audience going up to about the age of 24, however we disagreed with what gender it would appeal to more. some of us said girls as the main character who is committing the murders is a female however I personally thought that males would enjoy it more because the detectives also play a main role and they are males, also our film would be a crime thriller which appeals more to males than females. The wider audience for all thrillers is also males usually from their late twenties onwards. Our thriller is a cross between crime and psychological. Psychological thrillers are usually a 18+ this is because they can include a lot of violence and some psychological issues that may be harmful to younger viewers, this particular genre is more popular with males. Crime thrillers usually are a 15+ and they appeal to both males and females. I think our unique selling point is the fact that we have a woman as the main character in a crime film and she is also playing the role of various different characters as she changes through different disguises. I think this would appeal to our target audience as young people often like to see new things done in films and as it is rare to see a female play the main role it may interest them to watch the film. Below is a tumblr page I created of the type of male we would aim our film at. The blog is one that focuses on classic action movies and also crime thrillers.

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?
Base: National Metro
Source: Roy Morgan 2009

Thriller films are known to deliver uncertainty, anxiety, and nerve-wracking tension. This gives them  an audience who is interested in using there minds to come up with conclusions. Thriller films have a wide audience which is shown through the graph on the right.

Thriller Movie Gender Profile,
Base: National Metro
Source: Roy Morgan 2009
According, to the image on the left, thriller movies are more popular with the females than the males by 7%. This may be because females enjoy the "nerve-wracking tension" in thrillers. The reason why the males are lower than the females may be because other genres are more intriguing. Such as an action or horror film which can also be a thriller but males may not enjoy the idea of "making up conclusions".

The specific audience for thriller films varies as it depends on the sub genre of the thriller. These are many sub genre's for thrillers such as:
  • Psychological Thriller
  • Comedy Thriller
  • Mystery Thriller
  • Crime Thriller
  • Action Thriller
  • Religious Thriller
Memento (2000)
A psychological thriller like "Memento" would have a target audience that is mature and old. This sub genre focuses on the conflict between the characters psychological mind and reality which creates tension. It confuses the audience by manipulating a character or a plot to keep audiences guessing. The age of the audience would be 18+ as  the movie would involve the audience to think thoroughly. This sub genre may target both genders however as there are some aspect of horror, females may be attracted to the film. A psychological thriller may include a lot of violence which may be to disturbing for a younger audience therefore being more suitable for the older and mature audience.

However a crime thriller like our film "Young Eyes" has a more specific audience. The sub genre, crime thriller suggests that there may be action along with a mystery. This would specifically attract a male audience as the sub genre is part of a genre that males are interested in. The action and mystery in a crime pulls them in. The age range we are targeting is 16-24, as it features young characters. As the film title has the word "Young" it may bring a more diverse audience, such as young females as well as young males.

Females
Males
To get a better understanding of our target audience , i asked 4 males and 4 females from the ages 16-24, the question "Do you like Crime thrillers films?".
After going over the results, it felt like the females were more enthusiastic about crime thrillers as it gave them a "buzz" and they would "enjoy the adrenaline rush". Although the males had an interest in crime thrillers, they seem to prefer other genres like a horror. It could be that a thriller isn't as "thrilling" as a horror. I feel that a crime thriller could have a really diverse audience. This would make "Young Eyes" popular with both males and females.

As "Young Eyes" would come with a reasonable amount of violence and death, I suggest it would be right to to give the film the certificate, "15". This is because we are targeting an audience from "16-24" and younger audiences may feel disturbed by the killings. Also it wouldn't be appropriate for young eyes (pun intended) to see such brutal killings.

Evaluation - Question 5

Target Audience.
When filming our film opening we made sure it included many aspects that would appeal to our target audience. We have quite a wide target audience of 16 - 24 and due to this we would have quite a young audience.

Music.
One aspect of our opening that appeals to young viewers is the music. The music is an instrumental from quite current artists who also appeal to young people. This means it is likely that they have heard the song and they can identify with it.

Towards the older end of our target audience.
An aspect of our film that appeals to the more older viewers would be the detective voiceover which reveals there has been a serial killer in a neighbourhood. After researching I found out that detective shows/dramas appeal to young adults as they enjoy being intellectually challenged to find out what the mystery is.Our actors are at opposite ends of the age range, with our jogger in his late teens/twenties and Elizabeth appearing as a 60/70 year old.

Location.
The location we chose is one that can appeal to young and older viewers. The location is a park. In a park you are likely to see all age. Teenagers with their friends, young adults jogging or with their
children and the elderly walking their dogs.

Improving fro our rough cut.
Our rough-cut was very helpful, as it showed us what needed to be improved and we were asking our target audience so they were giving their opinions which showed us if they would be interested in watching it or not. After getting feedback from our rough-cut we decided to make a few changes.

Interviews
Below is a interview with Hermenia Powers. Who is 16 so would therefore be a part of our target audience. There is also another interview from a viewer who watched our finish film opening at the cinema.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Our film opening, "Young Eyes"focuses on the mystery of killings that have taken place in a quiet neighborhood  The serial killer is constantly in disguise, which creates different conceptions to the audience. The killings have gone on for far too long and need to be stopped. "Young Eyes" features a detective that seeks to unravel, the mystery serial killer.

"Young Eyes, is a crime thriller targeting a young audience from the ages of 16-24. I feel that the film would be more popular with the male audience due to the sub genre. The sub genre may attract a male audience as there is some aspects of violence.  However the film title "Young Eyes" may bring a mixed audience. The word "Young" may appeal to the young audience which would bring both males and females.

Facebook Page for Young Eyes

The film "Young Eyes" has reached our target audience through social media and word of mouth. Facebook and Twitter were essential to reaching our target audience. Without them, our audience wouldn't know where to watch the film. The film was available on many platforms such as the cinema, Vimeo and YouTube. The advantage of having it available on Vimeo and YouTube was it could be easily accessed by anyone at any time. It was easily shared through social media. Word of mouth was extremely effective as I was able to inform people who I couldn't reach. This lead on to a person passing it on to a friend and so on.

After receiving tonnes of feedback from our rough cut, we were able to make our overall thriller way better. We were told to tidy up the splits screen which we did. Also a few people said that we needed good sound effects and maybe add some music. We done this by adding a soundtrack which is upbeat. This created a normal and positive atmosphere for the audience. The natural sound which we had already was used when we didn't use the music, this was the birds, footsteps and water. I feel our film opening improved hugely from the feedback of the rough cut.

This is the interview with our target audience straight after watching our thriller opening. We received a mixed response with most liking the splits screens as it was professional and original. However some disliked that the running scene is pretty long also the music was a bit disliked. Also the death of the jogger being killed by the old lady was kind of funny to the audience. It may have been as it was unexpected or that it was an old lady killing a young man.

Some words the audience used to
describe the thriller
