A thriller opening that I looked at was
Victoria.
Sound:
|
Example of transitions. |
|
Titles are in a plain white font. |
This opening includes non-diegetic sound throughout which creates a creepy and mysterious atmosphere. Sound effects are added at various points, for example, when Eleni is performing ballet and falls to the ground sound effects are added. Also, when the door opens at the end on the clip there is the sound of a door shutting, this may have been made using foley sounds. Towards the end of the sequence the music fades out as you are begin to hear children singing.
Editing:
The titles, which are in a plain white font, have been added at the corners of the screen so that they are not disruptive.
|
Layered images. Camera work: long shot. |
Transitions are used throughout the title sequence which include fades and dissolves. These help the sequence to flow.
The editing is faced pace, creating a discrete title sequence. There are various shots and layered images which do not reveal any information about the film, however, they enable the audience to make assumptions about it.
Camera:
|
Layered images and extreme close up of Eleni's eyes. |
A variety of shots are used, including long shots and extreme close up's. The sequence starts with long shots and a close up of Elenis feet as she is dancing. This prevents the audience from connecting to her character. There is an extreme close up of her eyes and various props, showing that they may play a part in the film.
Mise-en-scene:
|
Camera work: close up.
|
The low key lighting of this particular sequence helps to create the mysterious atmosphere.
Two different settings are used; a dance studio and bedroom. Both of these fit in with the theme of the sequence. The props used include a china doll and vintage jewellery box, the props help the audience to create an idea of what the character may be like.
Eleni's performance also suggests that her character is perhaps unstable and also shows that she will be a main character in the film.
