genre & subgenre layla

Genre and Sub-Genre
Layla Farrugia

Genre is the french word meaning "kinda" or "type of". Media products are categorised through genre based on similarities in the narrative, it is also based on the story line of the narrative. Successful genres bring in audiences, so therefor they are repeated time and time again as it is what people like, genre is important because we are so developed in the type of genre that we can predict what will happen and this makes the audience feel more involved in the film. Some examples of genres are:

  •  Thriller
  • comedy
  • romantic
  • horror
  • action
  • science-fiction
Sub-genre is a category that is a subdivision from a larger division, when two genres are put together in a film, this could create a more interesting affect as it is not just one straight forward genre. Some examples of Sub-genres are:

  • romantic-comedy
  • action thriller
  • physiological thriller
The thriller sub-genre that inspires me most is "physiological thriller" as it is the one that I think is most interesting because you have to be focused throughout the whole film as is plays with your mind and you don't know what to expect from it, physiological thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time as they are usually full with suspense and tension what makes the film jumpy.

  • I think this opening could inspire my own film opening because I like that the majority of the opening scene is very still with a suspense sound track running through it, this works well as a thriller opening because it doesn't give away any of the story line but you can straight away tell that there is a suspense atmosphere and a confusing problem that has to be solved.
