Film Opening Analysis #1 - Trainspotting

The film Trainspotting uses a narrative opening to introduce characters as it's films opening,

Camera:

The opening starts off with 2 characters, who are being tracked by the camera. The camera shots are being switched between a mid shot and the lower feet shot. The angle also varies in shots, as sometimes it is lower or higher. The camera is focused on "Renton" (the guy with Yellow), which indicates that he is one of the key characters in the plot. Therefore making his appearance the first in the opening highlights his significance.

Mise en Scene:

The location of the film seems to be a town due to the lack of tall apartment buildings. Also you can tell it is a town as there are some basic shops and not huge buildings. Due to the fact that Renton is running from guys in suits, as the audience we are forced to think that he is a character with bad traits. Renton is a bald guy with  tracksuits and white trainers, this could apply to his representation of being a "chav". Also we see him in a run down room with him smoking which also highlights the possible stereotype of his representation. As Renton is the main character, he is always at the front and always before other characters which emphasises his importance to the film.

Editing:

Editing is mainly taking place when the characters are introduced. They are introduced through credits, which are parallel to the characters in the film. While they get introduced, the whole sequence is paused  in order to give the audience a chance to read and identify the characters.

Sound:
Sound plays a huge part in the opening as it gives clues of Renton. Through the digetic sound of his voices accent, the audience is able identify that he's is northern. Rentons voice is run throughout the opening, almost as if he's the narrator which in some aspects he is. He introduces other characters and tells the audience about himself, thus making the audience warm to him more. There is also an upbeat and jumpy music in the background which could be in relation to Rentons as being a fun and bubbly character.
